Abstract

This text seeks to explore the development of the academic and professional discipline of social anthropology in a specific subnational context: the state of Guanajuato, located in north-central Mexico. Its regional and historical development was shaped by its position as a crossroads between the south-central region, with Mexico City as its hub, the west, particularly Guadalajara, and the northern border. This crossroads status in the northern half of the country, coupled with a diverse and dense population following the expansion of settled colonization led by European immigrants from the 16th century onward, imbued this territory with a cultural and social ethos distinct from that of its original demographic components.
